Since the 14th century, the Prince Of Wales has inherited the symbol of three white feathers, golden coronet and the motto "Ich Dien" (I Serve).
It is believed the origin lies with the Edward Prince Of Wales, the Black Prince. The feathers were from his mother Philippa of Hainault's family and "Ich Dien" from the coat of arms of the King Of Bohemia.
